A Complete Unknown 2024 Movie Review

Bob Dylan is one of the most difficult celebrities to portray. Perhaps by his own choice, he is not the most expressive man in the world; his voice is often murmuring and he often seems unemotional. Whether out of cynicism about fame or for other reasons, he generally maintains aloofness, despite the eloquence of his music. Watch  A Complete Unknown 2024 movie on flixtor stream movies.

Timothée Chalamet, in James Mangold's A Complete Unknown, is perhaps the actor who comes closest to this idea. While this isn't a "Jamie Foxx plays Ray Charles" style interpretation, the story handles Dylan's enigmatic personality well and gives his star room to shine.

A young Dylan arrives in New York and travels to the hospital where his idol Woody Guthrie is being treated. He wants to pay his respects to him. Folk music legend Pete Seeger visits Guthrie upon his arrival. After hearing him sing, Seeger helps the aspiring musician by giving him performance opportunities and introducing him to important people, including Joan Baez. During this time, Dylan falls in love with Sylvie Russo, even as he is attracted to Baez.

It would be pointless to try to cover Bob Dylan's entire career in one film. A Complete Unknown focuses on his early years and a very specific idea. As Dylan's popularity grows through protest songs, Seger predicts he will be the artist who can take folk music to the next level and introduce it to people who had previously ignored it. But Dylan doesn't necessarily want the role. The film's second half features a discussion of electric guitars; Dylan is devoted to them and to the rock sound in general; Seger worries that they will scare off traditional folk music audiences.

It's a compelling approach, made all the more compelling by Chalamet and Norton's contrasting yet complementary performances. In the latter film, Seger is a quiet pacifist who always tries to downplay the conflict; in the former, he directly addresses Dylan's enigmatic nature. Watching these two men, with differing philosophies but a shared passion for music, respectfully but irritate each other creates humor and tension. A Complete Unknown is a masterful examination of the eternal battle between tradition and innovation.

The film is weak in its portrayal of women. Though Barbaro plays very well, Joan Baez hardly gets the recognition she deserves, while Dylan and Sylvie's romance is portrayed in a superficial and conventional way. Fanning has some strong moments. Unfortunately, the script never allows the character to become anything more than a regular friend.

A Complete Unknown would have been a stronger film overall with more detail on the women in Dylan's life, but its portrayal of Bob Dylan's staunch refusal to be boxed in as a folk musician is compelling enough to make the film worth seeing.
